We are just getting back from a magic family getaway! We pulled the kids out of school for some family time in the warm sunshine- a cruise on the Disney Magic. So today’s 365 recap is a 2-weeker, because I certainly wasn’t about to post from the ship. It felt so liberating to have zero internet access. I gleefully flipped my phone to airplane mode as soon as we got on the plane to leave Baltimore and wasn’t even tempted to check it in Florida. I don’t think I fully realized what a mental drain social media can be, despite it’s addictive tendencies.
We sailed out of Miami, and our first stop was Key West, Florida where we rented a gigantic golf cart to drive around and explore. The kids had a blast at a butterfly house (where if they held still, butterflies would land on them), we saw a lighthouse, we had our photos taken at the Southernmost Point of the US, we ate Conch Fritters, my husband and his Dad shared a beer at Sloppy Joe’s. I realized that I really don’t like taking my big camera on vacation. I took a ton of fun snapshots with my phone and generally enjoyed staying in the moment, and I began to resent carting around the big camera and worrying about it. (especially since I broke it last summer trying to take it to a theme park!) I did like this photo I took of the kids contemplating the ocean while we waited for our turn at the southernmost point, though, so I guess I’m glad I took the camera out briefly. Is it an award winning photo? Nope. Do I care? Not really. Most of my 365 photos from this trip were taken with an air of disdain, grumbling about needing to bring the big camera. After the first few days, I left the camera in our room mostly, and I’d hurry up to take some kind of photo in the morning to get it over with, or I’d wait and just bring it to dinner. For the most part, iPhone snapshots are more than enough for me.
