One of the most iconic shops on Main Street Bel Air is the delightfully quirky and laid-back Stalefish Board Co.
Owned by Harford County native Mel Machovec, Stalefish has a relaxing beach vibe. With a collection of paddle boards, Sanuks and other footwear, skateboards, snowboards, clothing and accessories, there is something for everyone in here.
Even if you haven’t been in the store itself, if you live or work in Harford County, you’ve seen the stickers. The first time I came into the store, I recognized the logo but couldn’t place why. It wasn’t until later in the day as I was driving home that I began seeing it all over the road, proudly attached to so many cars- this is a much-loved shop.
I think my favorite part of Stalefish is the eclectic vibe. Every time I go in, I notice something new. There are so many nooks and crannies with interesting items on display- I could walk the same corner 30 times and notice something different each lap. Second place, of course, is the women’s clothing. There is a fairly large selection for a store that I mistakenly took for just paddle/surf/skate boards at first. Mel has some really beautiful clothes for sale!
I can’t leave out Cracker, of course. He’s the hilarious parrot who is way too smart. When I was in the shop, he spent most of his time on top of the cage. I went over to talk to him and he looked at me, whistling and talking back. The moment I took out my camera, however, he immediately turned his back to me and climbed inside to hide.
Maybe it was a coincidence? Nope! I put the camera away, he’d come right back out. Camera comes out, back inside. He knew exactly what he was doing, and it cracked me up. I tried sneaking up on him, but he was too smart for me. This is my kind of bird- I loved him instantly.
Why does a parrot live in the shop? Believe it or not, Mel made a reluctant trade with a retired Washington Redskins football player- a skateboard for the parrot. Mel said that Cracker then bit him on the nose and he has been a part of Stalefish ever since.
