I was going through my archives today when I came across this oldie but goodie that I never got around to blogging. The warm fall colors were so cozy that I decided it’s time to share it.
Mom did an amazing job planning everyone’s outfits. No one is dressed in matching outfits, but all the colors are so harmonious together. And more importantly, still looks great with everyone’s individual coloring.
Ideally, in a family portrait, your clothing isn’t standing out. After all, this isn’t a fashion shoot. You aren’t here to make everyone see your clothing. Generally, you want the clothing to be a supporting element as opposed to a bold statement.
Because everyone’s outfits are complementary not only with each other, but also with the fall colors in the background, you notice faces first. The people, their expressions, and their love for each other are front and center in their importance.
And because they are dressed in what I’d call “cute casual” (you know, that delicate balance of not sloppy/lived in casual, but not stiff and overly formal), everyone is comfortable in their photos. You can tell when a child is uncomfortable in a button up or itchy formal sweater- they may work really hard to smile for you, but you can see it in their faces.
These kids radiate confidence and love- which to me is the utmost example of beauty.
My favorite way of advising families to plan their outfits is to pick a color palette. 3, 4, or even 5 colors that go together. It’s no different than decorating your living room or planning a single outfit with accessories. Mom should pick her outfit first- it’s so easy to find kid’s clothing in different options. Mom- you need to shine. You need to feel the same amount of confidence as your children! So pick your outfit first, and plan the rest of the family around you.
Of course, if you need help, don’t forget that all Signature Sessions include complimentary wardrobe styling by a professional stylist. If you have opted for a Digital Session, you can still upgrade to include the styling, as well. My goal for you is to have a completely stress-free experience, not just during the session, but in all the preparation for it, as well.
