I absolutely love photographing a brand new baby. And when I say brand new, I mean absolutely brand new. Still in the hospital, freshly born, just getting acquainted with the world.
This handsome guy was recently born at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Towson, MD. I watched as the proud big sister took care of her new brother. She decided he was HER baby, and her baby alone. She was there to supervise every moment, to make sure Mom was doing everything the right way. In a word- adorable.
These portrait sessions are very documentary or editorial style photographs. You don’t have to stress about your hair and makeup- you just delivered a brand new person into the world! It’s a lifestyle approach that focuses on the new baby and everyone getting to know each other. After all, they are only this teeny-tiny once, and those first few weeks tend to be such a blur as you focus on adjusting to your new way of life.
Celebrate how miraculous these first few hours of life can be with professional photography of these real life moments. These sessions take place in the first 48 hours of life, before you are discharged from the hospital. We will tentatively mark your due date in the calendar to reserve your spot. Don’t worry- babies are rarely born on their exact due date, so I don’t expect you to deliver then! It just serves to mark you in the calendar. When you are in labor, have your significant other, friend, or labor coach send me a text so I can start fitting you in the calendar. Once the little one is born and you are settling into the recovery room, you can text, call or email me to set your specific day and time for your portraits.
I talked to you last week about Add-On sessions. These hospital portraits are a beautiful add-on to your more traditional newborn portrait session, or they can stand alone as a full session in and of themselves. It’s a very flexible portrait session that we can build to suit your needs.
I can photograph (or even take video!) of your older child meeting their sibling for the very first time. We can document the first time your Mom meets her first grandchild. Or we can keep the entire session to Mom, Dad and their brand new baby. Skin-on-skin contact, so vital in the early days of life, is a beautiful moment to photograph. (tastefully and modestly, don’t worry.) The same goes for the beginning of a breastfeeding relationship- nursing photos with a newborn is something you will treasure when that sweet baby is grown.
Your newborn is going to grow and change more quickly than you may realize. When I am photographing traditional newborn portraits (typically done at 5-14 days old), parents commonly tell me how surprised they are at how much their newborn has changed already. The closest thing we have to a rewind button is photographs.
Photographing your baby’s first days would be an honor! Contact me today to get your due date on my calendar.
