Aa family portrait session can sometimes feels like chaos. My goal is for the kids to have fun- I don’t want it to feel like a chore for them- so that usually results in a lot of running around, silliness, and the feeling that we are just herding cats.
This chaos has purpose. By playing games and being silly, I’m subtly guiding the kids into poses. It’s a lot more fun to pretend to be a dog and run in circles, just to jump on Dad’s lap at the last minute, breathless and laughing, as opposed to being told, “okay, sit in Dad’s lap and smile.”
Understandably, sometimes this chaos can feel stressful to Mom and Dad. I want to reassure you- I’ve got this. You don’t need to worry about a thing. I will get the kids to where they need to be, with joy on their faces, and all you have to do is sit back and soak in the love of your children. Just laugh along with them and we will make beautiful portraits.
Am I saying kids never get out of control? Of course not. Kids are human, too, but I promise you that if we ever get to that point, I will ask you for help. (in 9 years it’s only happened once!) Otherwise, exhale and focus on playing with your kids.
When you look back at our time together, I’d rather your memories be full of playful, loving moments with your kids, not remembering the way I made you pose.
To me, an image like this is so much more precious than the one of everyone sitting still and smiling placidly at the camera. This shows real love. Through body language and facial expressions, you can see everyone’s personalities, you can see the love everyone has for each other strong and clear.
