Family portraits make my heart sing. To have a photograph that truly reminds you of the deep love within your family, one that doesn’t just record what everyone looked like on a given day, but instead expresses how deeply everyone adores each other… it is my driving passion in life to find that emotional bond.
I know that the trenches of motherhood are far from idyllic. That life with a baby is more time covered in body fluids, and don’t forget breathing your way through tantrums with your toddler. I believe children are an absolute gift, but that doesn’t make it an easy journey. In fact, I think it’s the difficult nature of the journey that makes it so precious. Mothers learn how strong they are in a way they never really understood before. It is a becoming, a blossoming, that could never have been experienced without these beautiful children we are raising. My children have shaped me into a better person.
Still, though. When it’s 5am and you’ve been up for the past 48 hours straight and you can’t take another “he’s touching me!” fight… it’s nice to look back on these portraits and let yourself be reminded how fiercely you love and are loved.
Sure, I take plenty of portraits of the kids together, of each child alone, etc. You will want a true record of how they looked, after all, to see how much they change through the years.
But it’s the together portraits that move me. When your children exhale and let themselves sag deeply in your arms because they are trusting in the safety of your lap, when your child’s eyes light up in adoration, anticipating the tickle that is headed their way, or even in the mischievous smile they get right before they launch themselves at you in a surprise hug… those are the moments where the unconditional love in your family shines the brightest.
